Some of the people look as if they had been ill for a long period of time and some look perfectly healthy. There are a few that are really creepy though. Like a dead father, or other family member holding a baby that is obviously just as dead. A girl who was dead for nine days at the time of the photo. I saw one (can't locate it again now though) where it must be a father and his child, but the father looks very dead. I can only imagine they must have kept the bodies around sometimes while another family member was dying????...for the event they might need to take a photograph? EEEEEEWWWWW!!! People who have never experienced that kind of loss have no idea of how deeply it can affect you. I constantly imagine how life would have been had he lived and how different it would have been. He was given the proper respect that EVERY human deserves. He was named, a funeral was held and lovingly buried in a place of love beside my grandmother. I desperately wish that a photo had been taken of him so that I could put a real face to the man who is so often in my thoughts and dreams. Anyways, i thought the photos are rather, creepy but like many of you said..back in the Victorian era things like this were the Norm...imagine if someone did a death photo like that NOW?? Oh wait...people do..you can see em on YouTube..Keywords Angel Babies..or Gone too Soon...You'll see how people memorialize their stillborns and older babies that may have passed from SIDS.I myself have a daughter who is 2 1/2 and when she was 8mo i lost her sister at 25weeks..and i could not...nor would i want too...have a photo of her. I mean i was TRAUMATIZED just by accidently seeing her lil lifeless blue body laying between my legs on the hospital bed...having pix of me holding her prolly woulda just done me in! Death wasnt such a taboo as it is in todays society, death now a days is brushed under the carpet, people don't like talking about it, yet in the times when these images were taken death was pretty much a daily occurance. I am sure if you find these images disgusting and disturbing, then definitely don't look at the photographical works of Mexican photographer Joel Peter Witkin.
