True, though sadly, as my usual gripe with Tiger Moms, is that they lose the point of a 'future' or say, 'a growth of a better person'. Most Tiger Moms I've read about and even met seem only concerned about a certain kind of 'intellectuality'. So long as the kid learns piano or violin, they call it 'important'. Learning how to improvise, compose your own music, or even ADOPT a certain genre different than Chopin or Mozart, is seen with discouragement. Seriously, I had a classmate who was BORED of piano, she called it the most blandest instrument of all music. When she asked to at least instead take lessons on a harpsichord, her parents got stomped their feet and demanded "WHY" as if she asked to do something so stupid. It even turned out they didn't even know what the instrument was, but it didn't stop them from scolding her.

Nevertheless, this stuff was pretty bad. There are cases where young girls were often compared with other siblings or women if their feet happened to be larger than them. By their own parents. If the young girls don't put it upon themselves to yank their bindings even tighter (which can be more dangerous and lead to likelier cases of gangrene), they'll constantly be provoked and goaded.
It got worse by the time of 1910s when missionaries caused a moral campaign against them. Many people soon got embarassed of them and started divorcing from the wives that had it done, and quickly remarrying younger girls who didn't. In the end, the girls who had it done faced worse by being outcasted from schools, potential husbands, and many parts of higher society. It all became for nothing.

I am reading Snow Flower at the moment, and like you curious to know more..4 years ago I had bunions removed from both feet, my toes had to be broken to allineate my foot...The pain cannot be desribed, my feet are perfect now. I cannot imagine anything more atrocious and painful than foot binding.

Dainty? Lord, those poor deformed feet are in no way dainty! Can you imagine the pain if they also had arthritis or other issues in those already painful appendages?

I just finished reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and it referenced foot binding and I was curious to learn more about it, the novel was great but to actually see pictures breaks my heart of the pain that these women had to endure for the sake of beauty and to marry well....thank you for sharing!

Tiger moms of yesterday. They would put their daughters through this unbelievable pain and suffering, so they may marry better and have a supposedly better future.
Thank god now it is over and Tiger moms discovered less painful ways to improve their daughters chances of a better future, like piano and violin.

I lack foreskin and I live a perfectly normal, healthy life. My procedure was performed in a hospital, shortly after my birth by health care professionals in a sterile environment. Yes I was not given a choice, but honestly I couldn't care less. Why do I need a foreskin? It does not hurt when I urinate and I do enjoy orgasm. Considering there have been no complications resulting from the procedure and the fact that I don't even remember the operation, I can't think of one reason why I would be upset. There is a big difference between what happened to me and what happens to 4 to 8 year old girls all over the world. These procedures are dangerous and pointless. I have not been able to find any evidence that suggests that FGM serves any purpose other than to appease the ignorant masses. I can't believe people compare the two.
